Book Review: The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino

Despite what the title might suggest this is not your typical down your throat sales book. It does not drown your mind with masterful techniques that will double your sales in 30 days nor does it claim to. This book is however, a masterful piece of work that is very well written.

I will try my best not to spoil the book for you in this review, but I will give you a bit of background. Rather than a boring sales book, this book is an imaginative story of someone who is ready to turn their life around and become the greatest salesman in the world! He seeks the current greatest salesman for guidance and this guidance is returned in the form of scrolls, which hold the key to becoming the greatest salesman in the world! 🙂

This book is filled with many powerful affirmations in various areas that can assist with selling, but I would not be deterred by this book if you do not see yourself as the traditional sales person. Selling is part of our daily lives e.g. a teacher has to sell their subject to the student, we sell ourselves to prospective employers and the list goes on. I would go further to say that I struggle to call it a sales book because it is more of an inspirational tale.

The book is not long and it could be read in one sitting. It packs a great short story and I would definitely suggest giving it a read.

One of my favourite excerpts is:

“Obstacles are necessary for success because in selling, as in all careers of importance, victory comes only after many struggles and countless defeats. Yet each struggle, each defeat, sharpens your skills and strengths, your courage and your endurance, your ability and your confidence and thus each obstacle is a comrade-in-arms forcing you to become better … or quit.”
