Today Starts From Zero

The other day it was late, I was tired and I didn’t want to do anything. I tried to repeat the Brian Tracy mantra “Eat that frog”, but I was on my last reserves of energy. I didn’t want to tidy the house, I didn’t want to do my evening routine, I mean, I did it yesterday and the day before that and I even did it the day before that day too! Give me a break!

Then something came to me. Today Starts From Zero. It sounds so simple. Well it sounds so simple because it is. In this moment the past does not matter, your future begins now, Today Starts From Zero.

As I said this to myself I had a massive brainwave. I realised how this simple principle did not just relate to me tidying the house and doing my evening routine. It dealt with being in the now, preparing for death, managing the ego, not being complacent, forgiving the past, being your best self and so much more.

This one principle was an eye opener for me. A timely reminder that all that really matters is now. It doesn’t matter what I have done before, today is what really counts. You can utilise the past, but you can’t go back, you can not use the past as an excuse for a lack of performance today. You can’t live today lost in the glories of your past, I mean that was great, well done to you, but life is for living. Your accomplishments will soon turn to zilch and you will either move forward or you will stagnate. Today Starts From Zero.

I truly believe that we have to make each day count. Every single day that we walk on this earth is a luxury. I have no understanding of the karmic relationship, which determines the death of a new born or a young child. I can not say that I am here today because I am blessed beyond belief and that the person who isn’t here today was just not as blessed as me. I can also not say that my purpose is so strong that I was spared another day. I truly have no idea why I am still here. What I can say however, is that every single moment we breathe, we have the opportunity to start afresh and live our best lives. We have the opportunity to start today from zero.

Our circumstances do not determine who we become. Two people can go through the same experience and they can turn out completely different.

I remember reading a story about two children that were brought up in an abusive home. One child grows up to be just as abusive as their parent whereas the other becomes a beacon of morality.

When asked the question about why they turned out like they did, they both responded in the same way, with what I went through how could I have turned out any differently?

You see the past does not have to define us. Your future is determined by your actions right now. The now is the only moment that you can influence. Sometimes we falter, sometimes we fail, but remember that in this very moment, it all starts from zero.
