You don’t need to finish every book

I am a person that likes to execute. If I do something, I like to see it through and then move on to the next project. This attitude however, has often transferred to my reading of books. Unless I am struggling beyond belief to continue reading, I will pretty much read every book that I buy until the end.

This is not the worst habit in the world, I confess, however, our time on this earth is limited. Therefore, reading every book to the end, whether it’s good or bad is not the best use of my time.

It’s something that I have heard before however, for some reason I struggled to let go of the habit. It is often in these moments where you need to hear something several times, or in a different way, for the message to hit home.

Upon reading a book recently, I believe it was by Chris Widener, I really took on the message that this does not need to be my fate. If you are not getting anything from a book after the first two or three chapters, you should sit that book down. Don’t feel guilty about it. Maybe the book isn’t for you, or maybe now isn’t the right time for you to receive it.

Don’t force the issue, if it’s not hitting home, move on. Time is too precious to live it in a completely laborious manner. Maybe you’ll return to that book and think it’s the best book that you have ever read. Or maybe you will never return to it and end up using those moments of your life for something more purposeful.

Every moment matters. Avoid being a passive passenger.
